As Coward's timeless comedy classic opens, we meet Ruth and Charles Condomine, and attractive, middle-aged couple in a contented but unsmouldering second marriage. The sceptical Charles is a novelist researching for a book on the occult and has invitee a well known medium to hold a seance at his house in order to expose her as a fraud. Unfortunately Madame Arcati is not so much a of a charlatan as everyone believes and accidentally conjures up the spirit of Charles' first wife, the seductive, mischievous Elvira.
Now Charles is stuck with an unwelcome guest whom he can't get rid of.
