Noel Coward describes “Private Lives” as “An Intimate Comedy”. It was an immediate hit at its premiere in London in 1930, where Coward and soulmate Gertrude Lawrence played the leads and a young Laurence Olivier played the priggish supporting role of Victor. Coward's sparkling dialogue and repartee have ensured the play's popularity ever since.
Set in France in the late 1920s, the plot centres around divorcees Amanda and Elyot, who are honeymooning in the same hotel with their new spouses. Their chance meeting throws them together, reminding them of why they fell in love, but also why they couldn't live together...
A sheer delight, showing "The Master" at his hilarious best.
