There's a revolution in Grusinia. The Governor's wife escapes, but in the confusion, leaves her baby son behind. The child is saved by Grusha, a kitchen-maid, who protects and loves him at great cost to herself. Then one day soldiers arrive to reclaim the child and return it to the Governor's wife. But who can be considered the true mother of the child - the birth mother, who abandoned him, or his adopted mother, who risked everything to save him?
Based on an ancient Chinese fold tale, Brecht's satirical fable has universal resonance.
