Catherine Sloper is a plain, painfully shy girl, whose emotionally detached father makes no secret of his disappointment in her.  When she meets the charming Morris Townsend, she is immediately taken by the attention that he lavishes upon her.  Catherine falls madly in love with Morris.  Doctor Sloper believes that Morris is merely a fortune hunter and threatens to disinherit his daughter if she marries him.  Wiill Catherine choose love or obey her Calvinist father?

Set amid the wealthy professional society of 1850s New York, this acclaimed play, based on the novel "Washington Square" by Henry James, became an Oscar-winning film featuring Montgomery Clift, Ralph Richardson and Olivia de Havilland, whose heartbreaking portrayal of the wealthy but extremely naive young woman won her an Academy Award.
