Wyndham's gripping story is set in a future devastated by nuclear holocaust. David Strom, a preacher's son, is growing up in the farming community of Waknuk, a settlement stripped of technology and ruled by religious fanatics whose stringent beliefs stifle the human mind and much worse, the human spirit. No mutation is tolerated - deviant crops are burnt, and animals culled, whilst humans are sterilised and exiled into the Fringes - regions still contaminated by radiation.
The author's points are in many ways even more relevant today than when he wrote the book in 1955, as we now consider man's place in the ecosystem and the damage his selfish actions have caused to the planet and to himself. It's also a ripping adventure. Some stories endure; this is one of them.
