The Talented Mr Ripley is an astonishingly intricate psychological drama torn from the pages of Patricia Highsmith's best-selling thriller. The delicious perversity of Highsmith's dark novel of deceit and murder lies in the casual normalisation of murderous impulses. Set in 1950s Italy, the plot centres on the encounter between impoverished Tom Ripley and playboy Richard Greenleaf. Richard's parents have sent Tom to find their spoilt, wayward son and persuade him to return home. Tom sees his chance for money and success - can he really get away with murder? Many people are familiar with the 1999 film, but this play is a darker version. Exquisitely detailed in the telling and with fascinating characters, it is an exciting, theatrical and darkly humorous exploration of the mind of an intelligent, audacious and charming psychopath.
